Szombathely

Szombathely, municipal seat of county Vas, is one of the oldest towns in Hungary.

Situated at the foot of the Alps, on the Western part of Pannonia. It was founded by Roman Emperor Claudius in 43 AD, under the name of Colonia Claudia Savaria.

The town, rich in historic and cultural heritage boasts a dynamic tourism industry with several festivals (Savaria Dance Competition, International Bartók Festival, Savaria Carnival, festival for Brass Bands) and International Fairs.

The sights of the town:

The Cathedral - the third biggest cathedral in Hungary
Episcopal Palace - a baroque building erected in the late 18th century. On the ground floor, open to visitors, Sala Terrana is housed, which is the first archaeological museum in Hungary.
Garden of Ruins - a section of the Amber Road, the Roman trade route that once ran through Europe, can be seen.
Iseum - the ancient sanctuary of the Egyptian goddess Isis
The Village Museum (Múzeumfalu): an outdoor museum representing regional folk architecture by reconstructing a folk village.
Kámon Arbiretum: a botanic garden on 27 acres.It is the most frequented when the Rhododendrons are in full blossom.
